A hundredth anniversary is always a milestone worthy of recognition. For the members of the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus, though, it’s also an opportunity to reflect on their founder, their mission and their continued dedication to providing services for seniors.

Mount Carmel Home in St. Catharines and Carmel Heights Residence in Mississauga have always been run and staffed by the Sisters. Sister Rosario, the administrator of Mount Carmel, believes that they offer a unique environment, with regular Catholic services and devotions. The Sisters, who still wear the full Carmelite habit, also live on the property and regularly spend time with the residents. “Some of the residents come here looking for an affordable retirement home; some come here because they know the Sisters are here,” said Sister Rosario. “They come from as far away as London, Ontario.”

To celebrate their 100th anniversary in Canada, there was a special Mass and reception at their Mother House parish in Mississauga attended by the Cardinal and local dignitaries. Sisters from across the region, including some travelling from the United States, were present.

The Carmel of the Divine Heart of Jesus was founded in the late 19th century by Mother Maria Theresa of St. Joseph, a nun from Germany. She came first to the United States and then to Canada in 1913. “Mother Maria Theresa had a vision to spread this good work of taking care of vulnerable people – children, the poor and seniors,” said Sister Rosario, who became a nun twelve years ago.

Although the Sisters’s work in the Niagara region started as a home for children in Merriton, it was quickly decided that the children would be better served in their home in Toronto. After it closed, the Sisters felt the community need for a home for seniors.  They welcomed their first few residents in 1920. Over the years, Mount Carmel grew and grew and in 1965, they re-built the home into its current structure. Carmel Heights, in Mississauga, was opened in 1952.

Over the past 90 years, the landscape and the retirement home sector have changed a great deal. When the home was founded, it was operated mainly by the Sisters. Today, the home boasts a team of staff from different backgrounds, some of have been there for decades. “Although it’s always taken hard work and a lot of love to care for seniors, today it also takes a lot of education, a lot of know-how,” explained Sister Rosario.  “Our commitment to serving seniors stems from our foundress’ desire to serve the most vulnerable in society. We hope that our homes are a haven of peace and joy for those who come to us at a time of need.”
