Knitting to help cancer patients

From Avalon Retirement Lodge, Orangeville

Avalon LodgeThe Avalon Retirement Lodge is proud to be home to a wonderfully talented and innovative woman by the name of Jean Wilson. Jean is a cancer survivor and also a supporter of her son in law Jim Albreight.  Jim is currently undergoing treatment for lung and liver cancer. Jean has developed and created a crocheted bottle bag that is being used by many patients to hold their chemo medicine while they received the treatment.  The Stronach Regional Cancer Centre in Newmarket as well as all their patients are so thankful for Jean’s donation of hundreds of bags.  They are a hot commodity and Jean has recently enlisted the help of other members of the Avalon knitting club to provide as many as possible.  Jim stated “Everyone loves the bottle bags.  They make the treatment easier.”  Thank you to Jim for allowing us to share your story and we all wish you a speedy recovery!

Celebrating an 105th birthday at Amber Lea Place

Jean Gray recently turned 105 years old and Amber Lea Place put on a party to celebrate!

Excerpt from the Brantford Expositor, who were present at the party:

“Grandma” Jean Gray’s Irish eyes were more than smiling on Wednesday – they were twinkling as she enjoyed being feted for her 105th.

In a retirement home filled with many in their 90s and three who are 100 and older, Jean is the queen of the day, having reached 105 on April 16 and still being in fine health and disposition.

“If I had a rope, I’d skip it!” she says with a smile at the monthly Amber Lea Place birthday party.

Her memory isn’t great – except for the words to all the hymns she loves to sing — but Jean is active and pleasant to all.

“I’ve no aches or pains of any kind,” she says. “I’m thankful to be as well as I am. I’m thankful to be alive.”
