Police across the country are warning the public about an increase in phone scams targeting seniors. Many of these are a version of the “grandson” phone scam. The Halton Police Service has a good brochure on this scam and some prevention tips.
ORCA would like to take this opportunity to provide some prevention tips for seniors, their families and our member communities.
How it works:
You receive a call from someone who says they are a friend, grandchild, insurance company or lawyer. The caller says there is an emergency and asks you to send money immediately (e.g. because they are in jail, had an accident), generally by wire transfer.
Prevention tips:
- Refuse to give money until you check the caller’s story with other members of your family
- Ask for a phone number to call back or ask them to call you again later
- You can always say “no”, even to family
- Write down the number that appears on your caller ID
- Speak to another friend or family member about the call and situation
- If you live in a retirement community, notify a staff member
